Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHL) operates the container terminals in Hamburg. With its logistics services the company forms a network between the overseas port and Mainland Europe. First and foremost, the focus is on improving internal processes in innovation activities. In addition, HHL is reacting to the megatrends “Internet of Things” and “autonomous transport systems”. Transport vehicles and infrastructure units are networked to automatically exchange and evaluate information. Close cooperation is sought with technical universities, research institutes, industrial partners and federal authorities. Since 2018, a cooperation has been running with Hyper-loop Transportation Technologies to transport ship containers in empty tubes at high speed. Together with the Fraunhofer Center, the use of drones for transporting empty containers is being investigated. The FRESH project aims to integrate the battery capacities of the company’s own transport vehicles into the German power grid as flexible storage facilities, thus contributing to grid stability. Together with MAN, autonomous trucks will be used on the site.
